Where governments can put their data…to work
August 5th, 2008 Lauren

Omobono is off to the Technology in Government conference in Sydney on the 18 August. Nic Darby will be representing us. It might sound dull but it’s a hugely interesting time for national and local government.
Suddenly data can not only be tracked but manipulated and used. Show US A Better Way is a really imaginative demonstration of this. It’s a government website with $40,000 to give to the best suggestion for how government could use data in new ways. Best of all they are making data available for people to play with.
When we’re in Sydney we’ll be talking about our work for HM Treasury and the DTI (as it was then). Most of all we’ll showcase our old, but still relevant Demand Broadband campaign that made us the first European agency to get a US Ogilvy award. It simply enabled consumers and businesses who wanted broadband in their home to register on a website. Their requests showed up on a map of the UK. We then took that data to new and existing telecom providers as maps identifying the demand hot spots - in other words - clear business opportunities for them.

Second Life’s second coming
July 11th, 2008 Ben

Google are at it again with the launch of Lively. Lively is Google’s take on virtual worlds. Until now virtual worlds have been built as proprietary applications meaning that, whilst it’s easy to get into them, it’s almost impossible to get out. The best known world is Second Life, and we spent a lot of time in 2007 building some very nifty islands where our clients engage and recruit talent across the globe.
But everyone has been waiting for a company with deep, deep pockets (that’s Google then) to integrate virtual worlds and the web. Lots of people, especially businesses want to see a 3D web. If you think of the future cost of travel and how un-PC it looks – the possibilities of ‘beyond telepresence and skype’ make it pretty exciting.
In the near future company intranets will start to resemble virtual worlds. Employees will work at home and their life-like avatars will attend meetings for them. Amd if they need to visit a customer or supplier then they’ll teleport from their company world to the next, just as easily as going to a new website. So whilst this may have started sounding geeky, it’s actually significant.

Look out, archers about!
June 27th, 2008 Lauren

Continuing with our season of discovering the unusual side of Cambridge, Omobono embarked on another new activity – archery. There appears to be a recurring theme of shooting things in this company – should I be worried? After resisting the temptation to make it compulsory for everyone to dress as Robin Hood, we made our way to join the Netherhall Archers for a good few hours of target shooting. I think we may have some potential Olympic archers. I was even complimented for my excellent posture – why thank you! London 2012 it is then!

Show time!
June 19th, 2008 Ben

Our youngest and most probably most talented member of the team had her final diploma show at the London College of Communication last Tuesday. Located in the glorious and glamorous corner of London that is Elephant & Castle (always a treat), a good slice of the office managed to get down to see Lauren’s work. She’s spent the last year juggling work with a fast track design course at what is a great school.
Congrats to her. Now the challenge is to crash together new design skills with new technology. The mission is going to be using some of the new technologies like ActionScript 3, PaperVision and Flash for mobile. Just another day at the office for Lauren then. Well done on a great show.
